Technology

TerraSond's knowledge and ability to manage new technologies enables us to play a key role in the surveying and mapping industry.

We own and maintain a large suite of complex software and equipment that is necessary for executing accurate land and hydrographic surveying and mapping. The technology includes specialized tools for obtaining measurements and performing calculations on land and water that are essential for creating, editing and analyzing spatial and attribute data.

We support our staff's ability to manage new technologies by providing additional education and training. We also encourage hands-on experience to increase the conceptual understanding of geographic information systems (GIS) and their practical application for our projects.

Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers

ADCPs use ceramic transducers and work in water, similar to the way loud speakers work in air. The sound pulse they produce travels through the water and the echo of the sound is returned and shifted in frequency due to the Doppler affect.

TerraSond uses ADCPs in rivers and canals for long-term continuous discharge measurements, mounted on boats for instantaneous surveys in the ocean or rivers, and mounted on the seabed for long-term studies. We also use them to locate eddy's that could damage oil drilling activities.

Drafting Software

TerraSond prepares technical drawings and plans, which are used to build everything from roads and bridges, to port terminals, and to oil and gas pipelines.

With CADD systems, drawings can be stored electronically and viewed, printed, or programmed directly into automated manufacturing systems. CADD also permits the quick preparation of variations of a design.

Geographic Information Systems

GIS applications are time and resource saving tools that are used in every aspect of a hydrographic survey.

Remote sensing data is used for advanced field reconnaissance during the planning stages of a project, while electronic navigational charts are analyzed to predict the amount of time necessary to complete a project. Analysts use GIS to provide real-time updates of survey progress during survey operations, as well as identify, locate and attribute hazards to marine navigation.

TerraSond's most complex GIS tools are applied to the development of our final hydrographic products. Our modeling capabilities include three-dimensional fly through scenarios, high resolution digital terrain models, georeferenced video and time sequenced sea bottom analysis using sonar, lidar and seismic datasets. We also provide GIS-based data analysis that includes volume computations, pipeline condition and undersea cable route selection.

Hydrographic Data Processing Software

We own enough hydrographic software to field our systems and manage very large projects with multibeam and side scan sonar.

For projects, we use CARIS, the "Gold" standard in software for processing single beam, multibeam and side scan sonar data. This software is the standard in the industry for rigorous traceability and large dataset management.

In addition to purchased software, we have written extensive programs for managing and manipulating large datasets. That software is proprietary and can be modified easily to meet new and unique data challenges.

Our personnel are trained in the latest hydrographic surveying techniques, software programs and systems.

Laser Scanners

Laser scanners are able to collect data on the shape and appearance of objects or elements of the environment. The data that is collected can then be used to construct digital models. This technology can be used to perform highly detailed surveys of railway and road networks, breakwaters and projects requiring shoreline verification.

Motion Platforms

TerraSond owns enough motion sensors to field a number of multibeam, singlebeam and side scan surveys simultaneously. There are six motion platforms available for projects that include the Seatex Seapath 200, Applanix POS/MV and CODA-Octopus F185. These systems are used for multibeam surveys where heading, heave, pitch and roll are required. The systems provide RTK position and height and are compatible with dual frequency Trimble GPS receivers.

Multibeam Sonar Systems

Multibeam systems produce high-resolution bathymetry data throughout the survey area.

A multibeam sonar system provides fanshaped coverage of the seafloor with the output data in the form of depths. The system will measure and record the time for the acoustic signal to travel from the transmitter (transducer) to the seafloor (or object) and back to the receiver. Search patterns usually are run as a series of parallel lines that ensure overlapping coverage of the multibeam sonar.

TerraSond performs more multibeam surveys than singlebeam when measured by staff hours, revenue, data volume or any other measure. TerraSond owns several multibeam systems and regularly rents additional systems when needed. Trained personnel, software, hardware, custom vessels and multibeam echosounder systems in-house allow the fielding of several multibeam surveys simultaneously. Three or more concurrent multibeam surveys are regularly fielded.

Side Scan Sonar Systems

Side scan sonar systems are commonly used by marine researchers to search for and detect objects on the sea floor.

A side scan sonar system requires three components-a towfish that sends and receives acoustic pulses, a transmission cable attached to the towfish that sends data to the ship, and the ship's processing computer. In a side scan the transmitted energy is formed into the shape of a fan that sweeps the sea floor from directly under the towfish to either side, typically to a distance of 100 meters. The computer plots the data points so that scientists can visualize the found object or sea floor feature. While the shape of the sea floor and objects on it can be well-depicted, most side scan systems can not provide any depth information.

TerraSond has considerable experience with side scan sonar technology; owning and operating a series of side scan systems since 1994. The latest systems purchased are two Edgetech 4200S systems. These are digital chirp systems that are software configurable for either high speed (multi-ping)or high definition modes.

Singlebeam Sonar Systems

Singlebeam sonar sensors use sonar technology to collect measurements of the seafloor.

A singlebeam sensor consists of a transducer, mounted on or towed by a boat that feeds into a signal processor and display device. The transducer emits a single sound pulse with a narrow footprint into the water column at specific intervals directly below the transducer. The sound wave bounces off the seafloor and the return is captured by the transducer.

TerraSond prefers to use the Odom Hydrotrac and Odom Echotrac MKII echosounders. We maintain a large inventory with many being built into the hulls of our vessels, or used for spares and chartered vessels. The standard transducer is a 208khz 3º transducer. Other models available are designed specifically for extremely shallow water and the penetration of mud. Also used are echosounders that are "frequency agile," meaning that they can support a wide variety of frequencies, should special needs arise.

Sound Velocimeters

TerraSond uses sound velocimeters, or SVPs (sound velocity probes/profilers) to measure the speed of sound through a water column. The speed of sound varies, depending on temperature, salinity and depth of the water.

SVPs have one pressure sensor to measure depth, a transducer and a reflector. The sound velocity is calculated using the two-way travel time of an acoustic signal between a transducer and reflector.

On site sound velocity is used to calibrate and process singlbeam and multibeam sonar data. True sound velocity in the water column is determined so that accurate depth measurements can be obtained.

Multibeam and sound velocity data is collected then processed using CARIS's hydrographic processing software. Using CARIS, soundings from the multibeam sonar system are adjusted for sound velocity.
