Remote Sensing Technician – Palmer, AK

The Remote Sensing Technician is responsible for supporting remote sensing projects and
applying remote sensing principles and methods to analyze data and to acquire and interpret data
from various sources.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
 Participates in the planning or development of mapping projects.
 Maintains records of survey data.
 Documents methods used and writes technical reports containing information collected, analyzed and interpreted.
 Develops specialized computer software routines to customize and integrate image analysis.
 Collects verification data on the ground, using equipment such as global positioning receivers, digital cameras, or notebook computers.
 Verifies integrity and accuracy of data contained in remote sensing image analysis systems.
 Prepares documentation or presentations, including charts, photos, or graphs.
 Operates unmanned aerial vehicles, autonomous surface vessels and remote sensing equipment, such as survey cameras, sensors, or scanners.
 Monitors raw data quality during collection and make equipment corrections as necessary.
 Merges scanned images or build photo mosaics of large areas, using image processing software.
 Integrates remotely sensed data with other geospatial data.
 Evaluates remote sensing project requirements to determine the types of equipment or computer software necessary to meet project requirements, such as specific image types or output resolutions.
 Develops or maintain geospatial information databases.
 Corrects raw data for errors due to factors such as skew or atmospheric variation.
 Calibrates data collection equipment.
 Consults with remote sensing scientists, surveyors, cartographers, or engineers to determine project needs.
 Adjusts remotely sensed images for optimum presentation by using software to select image displays, define image set categories, or choose processing routines.
 Manipulates raw data to enhance interpretation, either on the ground or during remote sensing flights.
 Collects geospatial data, using technologies such as aerial photography, light and radio wave detection systems, digital satellites, or thermal energy systems.
 Collaborates with agricultural workers to apply remote sensing information to efforts to reduce negative environmental impacts of farming practices.
 Collects remote sensing data for forest or carbon tracking activities involved in assessing the impact of environmental change.
 Provides remote sensing data for use in addressing environmental issues, such as surface water modeling or dust cloud detection.
 Provides remote sensing support to construction projects. 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 Demonstrated critical thinking ability to use logic to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
 Strong foundation in remote sensing and surveying principles and methods required
 Highly motivated, organized and detail oriented
 Demonstrated commitment to safety management, principles and protocols
 Working knowledge of personal computers including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
 Strong mathematical aptitude
 Strong oral and written communication skills
 Unquestionable ethics, integrity, and commitment to excellence 

Required Background and Experience:
 2 years of remote sensing experience combined with completed degree or equivalent combination of work experience and education
 AS/AA or BS/BA in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, Natural Sciences, Engineering, or other relevant discipline preferred
 Experience with computers and electronics to include electronic equipment, computer hardware and software including applications and programming
 Desirable to have experience editing and classification of mesh and point cloud data.
 Survey experience is highly preferred
 Experience in GIS is desired by not required
 Video editing experience is helpful
 Part 107 License is a plus
 Candidate must be legally eligible and insurable to drive to regular assignments

Working Conditions:
Work duties are performed in office and considerable amount of outdoor field work environments. This position requires occasional heavy lifting of survey equipment. Adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours may be required to meet project deadlines.
