Payroll Specialist/HR Assistant

TerraSond, a precision geospatial solutions provider based in Palmer, Alaska is seeking a Payroll Specialist/HR Assistant to support its survey efforts in Alaska. Under the direction of the Controller, the Payroll Specialist/HR Assistant is responsible for all aspects of payroll generation and payroll reporting. As HR Assistant, he or she assists with benefits administration, calculating employee premium accounts, administering enrollments and terminations, and providing income verification information.

The position requires residence within a reasonable commuting distance from the Palmer, Alaska office and does not include relocation.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Collects bi-weekly timesheets and review information for completeness and accuracy
Contacts employees and/or supervisors to resolve any missed or incorrectly coded time
Researches, trains, and prepares documents for staff regarding payroll procedures and software use
Maintains payroll spreadsheets to ensure accuracy
Compiles payroll data such as allocation of employee hours, workers compensation, payroll taxes, 401K deductions, garnishments, and PTO
Researches and provides information for international payroll
Sets up and withholds multi-state taxes
Prepares quarterly taxes and generates appropriate payments
Reconciles GL accounts and generates appropriate journal entries
Enters Cash Receipts into VISION, advises appropriate TerraSond staff of payment and prepares bank deposits
Sets up employee direct deposits
Answers phone
Enrolls and maintains employee benefits and reconciles benefit provider bills, preparing journal entry summaries page for Accounts Payable Coordinator
Assists HR with various HR related tasks such as filing, processing background screens, entering new employee information, and using e Verify
Job Specifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of payroll taxes, deductions, tax liens, and garnishments
Working knowledge of personal computers including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
Excellent problem solving/judgement skills with a high level of attention to detail and accuracy
Clear speaking voice in the English language
Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise extreme discretion
Effective oral and written communication skills
Excellent math skills
Ability to handle and prioritize multiple tasks and meet all deadlines

Required Background and Experience:
A High School Diploma, GED or equivalent
2 years of relevant experience or training
Experience with answering and transferrin calls on a multi-line phone system
Proficient in Microsoft Suite programs especially Microsoft Outlook

Tools and Equipment Used:
Standard office equipment including personal computer, multi-line telephone system, portable phone, fax machine, copier/scanner, postage machine, card scanner, 10 key calculator, multiple printers and coffee makers

Working Conditions:
Work is performed in an indoor office environment and requires sitting for long periods of time. Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines.
