Hydrographer Locations: Palmer

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Collect and oversee collection of hydrographic data

  • Install, configure and operate acquisition software and hardware

  • Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and maintain surveying equipment including single beam sounders, multi-beam echo sounders, sidescan, and applicable Motion Reference Units and Gyros

  • Analyze and process data using project-specified software packages

  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control of collected and processed data

  • Write field operation daily reports, maintain logs and update records

  • Review GPS differential correction source and software to ensure that configuration is correct

  • Direct, coordinate and review project plans from start to finish, meet with staff to identify and resolve problems, assign and quality control work product, monitor work flow, review and evaluate work products, methods and procedures, suggesting improvements as necessary

  • Update Project Manager and/or Lead Hydrographer with daily data acquisition progress

  • Diagnose faults in acquisition systems and interface with appropriate TerraSond Ltd. staff member(s) to facilitate repairs

  • Assist in establishing project goals and objectives

  • Write and proof project descriptive reports

  • Assist with mobilizing and demobilizing boats in the field


Supervisory (If Applicable):

  • Under the supervision of the Project Manager and/or Lead Hydrographer, direct, review, and quality control collection and data processing efforts of junior hydrographic survey technicians


Job Specifications:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of all aspects of hydrographic surveying including DGPS, RTK, tides and tide zoning, cartography, sound velocity, multibeam echosounder, single beam echosounder operation, sidescan collection and interpretation, and determination and application of vessel configuration offsets

  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the work of junior technicians

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety principles and protocols

  • Working knowledge of personal computers including word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of hydrographic data analytical tools including Caris, Hypack and QINSy

  • Ability to identify deviation, anomaly, and data quality issues during data collection

  • Ability to perform physical tasks in a variety of environments, including at sea

  • Demonstrated commitment to safety principles and protocols


Required Background and Experience:

  • AS/BS in Geomatics, Cartography, Geography, Natural Sciences, Engineering, or other relevant discipline

  • Minimum of one year of hydrographic survey experience utilizing current technologies

  • Multibeam experience preferred

  • Experience in GPS and cartography

  • Extensive background in mathematics to include arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, statistics, and their applications

  • Candidate must be legally eligible and insurable to drive to regular assignments

  • Ability to plan and execute projects from start to finish


Tools and Equipment Used:

  • Standard office equipment including personal computer, telephone system, fax machine, copier, scanner and printers

  • GPS, single beam echosounder, multi beam sonar, side scan sonar, conventional land surveying instruments, and electronic distance-measuring equipment


Certificated and Licenses Required:

  • Valid Driver's license

  • Ability to procure a passport


Working Conditions:
Work is performed in a combination of an office and a field environment. Field work is performed outdoors and may take place in inclement weather and extreme temperatures. Hydrographic survey work requires working at sea for extended periods of time and may require living and working in close, cramped quarters. Both field and office work requires occasional heavy lifting of survey equipment. Responsibilities may require an adjusted work schedule, long days, and evening/weekend hours in order to meet deadlines. Extensive travel is required.
