Beach Erosion Surveys

Beach erosion surveys often require profiling above and below the water.

They are repeated at varying intervals to determine the erosion level and determine where the sand is transported due to typical ocean processes and storm activity.

The uplands or above water portion can determine if the level or position of the beach is changing and the below water portion tracks the movement of material and shoals offshore.

We use RTK GPS for horizontal and vertical positioning. The uplands are surveyed with a RTK backpack system and the portion in the water is surveyed either with a small boat and an echosounder or a Personal Water Craft (PWC) towing a sled. The PWC is particularly effective in areas where shallow water and surf make the use of a small boat and echosounder difficult.

For a large survey in Alaska we put RTK GPS and a low cost pitch, roll and heading sensor on an all terrain vehicle and were able to work quite rapidly in a tidally controlled area.
